Learn more: Labiaplasty

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the labia, most commonly the labia minora (inner labia). In selected cases, it can also involve refinement of the labia majora (outer labia). The goal is to address a specific concern such as friction, discomfort, or noticeable asymmetry, while maintaining a natural contour and protecting function.

When is labiaplasty worth considering?

Labiaplasty may be considered when labial tissue causes persistent quality-of-life issues, such as:

  • Rubbing or pinching in fitted clothing
  • Discomfort during walking, gym training, cycling, or long days
  • Recurring irritation with underwear or swimwear
  • A pulling sensation during movement
  • Asymmetry that affects comfort or confidence

What does labiaplasty actually change?

Labiaplasty can reduce excess tissue, improve symmetry, and refine contour. Depending on your anatomy and goals, your surgical plan may include:

  • Reducing specific areas that create friction points
  • Balancing one side if it is longer or shaped differently
  • Contour refinement so the result looks natural and not “over-corrected”
  • If clinically appropriate, limited labia majora refinement for overall balance

How is the technique chosen?

Technique is chosen based on tissue thickness, the pattern of friction, and the type of contour change needed. A careful approach matters because aggressive reduction can lead to dryness, tightness, or an unnatural appearance. Your consultation should focus on realistic outcomes and tissue preservation, not extremes.

Will there be scars? Where are they?

Incisions are typically planned along natural borders and folds so scars are discreet once healed. Scar quality depends on your skin biology, tension on the wound, aftercare, and time. Your surgeon will explain expected scar placement and what scar maturation usually looks like.

What about sensation and function?

Preserving sensation and tissue health is central to planning. Temporary sensitivity changes can occur while swelling settles. Your consultation should include a direct discussion of sensation risk, how it is minimised, and what to do during healing to protect tissue.

Recovery timeline

Recovery varies, but most patients experience:

  • Days 1 to 3: swelling and tenderness, focus on hygiene and friction reduction
  • Week 1: gradual improvement, avoid long walking and tight clothing
  • Weeks 2 to 4: swelling continues to reduce, most return to routine activities depending on comfort
  • Weeks 4 to 6+: exercise and intimacy resume only after clearance

Your surgeon will personalise this based on what was done and how you are healing.

What should I avoid during healing?

To reduce complications such as delayed healing or wound separation, avoid:

  • Friction-heavy activity (cycling, running, tight gym wear)
  • Intense training or heavy lifting too early
  • Swimming or soaking until cleared
  • Intimacy until cleared
  • Self-medicating topical products not recommended by your clinician

How do I know if I need labiaplasty or something else?

If the concern is primarily external tissue friction, asymmetry, or contour discomfort, labiaplasty may help. If the concern involves the perineum or the vaginal entrance support, a different procedure such as perineoplasty may be more appropriate. Consultation clarifies this quickly and safely.
